BMW 1 Series three-door

BMW has released pictures of the new three-door variant of the entry 1 Series model. Obviously much is the same as before, though as well as the changed side cut-line graphics, the rear bumper has been altered for a more planted look, while the kidney grille has been enlarged for improved airflow to what is BMW's most economical engine. The diesel motor of the 118d returns 60.1mpg, with only the Hydrogen 7 in the range producing lower CO2 emissions. The rest of the range still benefits from a 3% improvement in fuel economy, however, thanks to Brake Energy Regeneration (iGR), which makes its debut on the 1-er.

Six different engine options are available, including the 3.0-liter straight six producing 265PS, and the 118d's bigger brother, the 120d, whose 7.5s 0-60mph time puts it ahead of the other gas-driven cars. With the removal of the rear doors, the lengthened front doors are now frameless and customers can now opt for a four- or five-seat layout, giving the three-door, as with the 3 Series, a more coupe-like feel. Expect to see it in Switzerland soon...
