SsangYong Chairman W

South Korea-based manufacturer SsangYong Motors announced plans to launch the Chairman W on February 27, a large luxury sedan for the domestic market. The company claims it developed the vehicle with great ambitions, aiming to create a premium sedan leader in Korea.

Thanks to the rear-wheel-drive package, the Chairman W is a solid design with a long hood, short overhangs, 19-inch alloy wheels and a sleek profile. But its surface volume is slightly flat and lacks stand-out features to clearly differentiate it from its competition. With a somewhat generic front and rear-end design, SsangYong sends a clear message that the proportions and profile were the design priority.

SsangYong has been very successful in the Korean luxury segment, with the Chairman H - the larger version of Chairman W - being one of the best-selling super luxury vehicles for more than a decade. And with the exponential growth of European luxury car imports in the last few years and the launch of Hyundai Genesis in January, the D2-size luxury segment is suddenly becoming a fierce battle ground in Korea.
